19 January

A round table meeting was held in Strasbourg, France, dedicated to the issues of implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights by the Russian judiciary.

Bogdan Zimnenko, deputy head of the Department for systematization of legislation and analysis of judicial practice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, took part in the Roundtable held under the auspices of the Russian Legal Information Agency as an international expert.

22 February

Tatiana Petrova, Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, met with a delegation of the OSCE Election Observation Mission for the 18 March presidential election, headed by Jan Petersen, Head of the Office for democratic institutions and human rights.

During the meeting, issues of judicial and legal nature related to the specifics and procedure of consideration of administrative cases regarding the current electoral process were discussed. Such cases are considered in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation and the lower courts within the framework of the Code of Administrative Judicial Procedure.

6 March

An international conference on topical issues of justice was held in Ankara, Turkey, as part of celebrations of the 150th Anniversary of the country’s Court of Cassation (Yargitay).

Heads of superior courts from more than 20 countries took part in the conference and celebrations. The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation was represented by First Deputy Chief Justice Pyotr Serkov.

12 March

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Lebedev received a delegation of the National Assembly of Hungary headed by Chairman of the Justice Committee Imre Vejkey.

During the meeting, issues aimed at developing fruitful contacts in the sphere of lawmaking and administration of justice were discussed.

13 March

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Lebedev met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Russian Federation Boyko Kotsev.

The priorities of the Bulgarian presidency of the EU Council, as well as the prospects of further mutually beneficial business contacts between the two countries were discussed.

On the same day, Chief Justice Lebedev met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba to the Russian Federation Gerardo Penalver Portal.

During the conversation, the importance of dynamic development of Russian-Cuban relations in the field of judicial cooperation was repeatedly emphasized.

28 – 31 March

At the invitation of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, a delegation of the Supreme People’s Court of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, headed by President Nguyen Hoa Binh, paid an official visit to Moscow.

In accordance with the program of stay, the delegation was welcomed by Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev, had meetings with the Director-General of the Judicial Department at the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Alexander Gusev and the President of Moscow Region Court Vasily Voloshin, visited numerous places of interest.

The guests were interested in issues related to the organization of activities within the Russian judicial system and implementation of e-justice technologies.

9 – 10 April

A high-level meeting was held at the initiative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime at the Vienna International Centre, Austria, to celebrate the launch of the Global Judicial Integrity Network.

This initiative, being a part of the international program for the implementation of the Doha Declaration adopted in 2015 at the 13th UN Congress on crime prevention and criminal justice, aims to increase transparency in public administration and maintain the integrity of criminal justice systems in accordance with the UN Convention against Corruption.

The event was attended by Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Sergey Rudakov.

10 April

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Lebedev received a delegation of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the State of Qatar, headed by Prosecutor General Ali Bin Fetais Al-Marri.

The parties exchanged views on mutually interesting topical issues of improving the judicial procedure.

18 – 20 April

At the invitation of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, a delegation of Finnish superior courts, headed by Supreme Court President Timo Esko and Supreme Administrative Court President Pekka Vihervuori, paid an official visit to Moscow.

During the stay, the delegation had meetings and conversations with Chief Justice Lebedev, the Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation Alexander Konovalov, President of Moscow Region Court Vasily Voloshin and President of the Commercial Court of Moscow Nikolay Novikov.

When concluding the visit, the parties recognized it as highly important and useful in terms of developing and strengthening bilateral relations between the top judicial bodies of Russia and Finland.

 22 – 26 April

A delegation of the Court of Cassation of the State of Qatar, headed by President Masoud Al-Ameri, paid an official visit to Russia.

The delegation was welcomed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Lebedev, the Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika, Director-General of the Judicial Department at the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Alexander Gusev. Meetings were also held with the President of Moscow Region Court Vasily Voloshin and President the Commercial Court of Moscow Nikolay Novikov. The guests also visited the Russian State University of Justice.

During the talks, the parties repeatedly stressed that the visit marked a new stage in relations between the two countries, noted the similarity of judicial systems, expressed interest in further cooperation and exchange of information on the improvement of justice.

12 – 14 May

A delegation of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, headed by President M.J. Moreno Perez, made a working visit to Moscow.

During the stay, the delegation was received by Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev, visited the complex of buildings of the Supreme Court, as well as the cultural attractions of the capital.

17 – 20 May

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Lebedev met with Ricardo Luis Lorenzetti, President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Argentina, who was in Moscow on a working visit.

During the conversation, the parties discussed the specific features of judicial systems of Russia and Argentina, as well as the activities of the Russian Supreme Court in implementation of the legislative function and liberalization of criminal legislation.

24 – 25 May

A delegation of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, headed by Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev, took part in the 13th Meeting of Chief Justices of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization held in Beijing, China.

During the event that took place in a friendly and constructive atmosphere, while discussing the issues of developing SCO cooperation in the sphere of justice, the participants exchanged views and discussed IT implementation in judicial activities, creation of “smart courts”, application of law and cross-border judicial cooperation in the fight against terrorist violence, drug trafficking, money laundering and other crimes, the legal norms and judicial practice regarding exclusion of inadmissible evidence in criminal proceedings, the legal norms and judicial practice on contracts for the international sale of goods, as well as the improvement of the SCO international cooperation mechanism in the sphere of administration of justice.

A Joint Statement was co-signed by the heads of delegations following the results of the Meeting.

4 June

Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Vladimir Davydov met with a delegation of the Military Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan, headed by Deputy Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan – Military Prosecutor of Azerbaijan, Justice Lieutenant General H.R. Veliyev, who visited Russia at the invitation of the Military Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.

The purpose of the visit to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation was to get acquainted with the organization of work at the Judicial Chambers for Criminal Cases and the Cases of the Military.

7 – 9 June

Sergey Kryukov, Head of the IT Department of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, visited Strasbourg, France, to participate in the Focal Points Forum of the ECHR’s Superior Courts Network, created to enrich the dialogue with the national courts through practical and useful tools for the exchange of up-to-date information on the application of the European Convention on Human Rights.

25 – 28 June

A delegation of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, headed by Chief Justice Kozimjan Kamilov, visited Moscow at the invitation of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.

In accordance with the program of stay, the delegation was received by the Chief Justice Lebedev, the Director-General of the Judicial Department at the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Alexander Gusev, the President of the Commercial Court of Moscow Nikolay Novikov, and the President of Moscow Region Court Vasily Voloshin.

The visit resulted in the signing of a Cooperation Agreement between the Supreme Courts of Russia and Uzbekistan, emphasizing the parties’ intentions to constantly exchange experience on improvement of the judicial system, strengthening of the role and prestige of the judiciary, the activities of various judicial institutions, ensuring the independence of courts and training of judges.
